In 2004, Raven software game developer surprised us with the action RPG (Role Playing Game) X-Men Legends. This brand new RPG, based around the legendary X-Men created by Stan Lee (one of the Marvel's oldest comic writers), told the story of mutants trying to save themselves and the world at the same time. A year later Raven is back at it again with X-Men Legends 2: Rise of Apocalypse. The new game follows the familiar formula of its predecessor with a brand new story, characters, and some major tweaks. Is this game worth purchasing or should it join the big scrap pile of overly bland and repetitive licensed games? Read on to find out......

Story-wise the game's plot is really great. In fact it feels just like a story out of an X-Men comic book. Basically Professor X (leader of the X-Men) and another X-Man get kidnapped by the evil mutant known as Apocalypse. Realizing that Apocalypse is a serious threat to the world, X-Men join forces with their most hated foe, the Brotherhood of evil mutants lead by the evil mutant known as Magneto in order to save Professor X and stop Apocalypse. As the story unfolds, more and more mutants are kidnapped by Apocalypse so that their powers can be combined to make the evil mutant more powerful. In the end, the X-men and the Brotherhood thwart the plans of Apocalypse only to separate as adversaries once more. As mentioned above, this is a great story that truly respects the origins of the X-Men.

  Coalition of Enemies

What can I say about game play? Endless hours of hack n’ slash and frantic button smashing the mutant fashion yet it never gets old either…More specifically talking, each mutant has a plethora of powers (10 powers per character to be exact) and then there is more than 15 playable characters. Some characters include fan favorites like Wolverine and Jean Grey and other new-to-the-series characters such as Bishop and of course Magneto. And added to this are beautiful environments such as Jungles in Avalon, New York City, and even the inside of the Giza pyramid in Egypt in which your heroes traverse in hopes of thwarting the plans of Apocalypse. In the original X-men Legends there was four player Co-op yet there weren’t any online modes. New to the X-Men Legends 2, you can bring your game online with friends from far away. In addition to this, there are other game modes such team brawls and king of the hill type of game modes in the “Danger Room.” This adds a lot mileage to the game…..

Filled with brilliant colors and environments, game play looks chaotic and fun as ever...

In terms of presentations, this game looks just like a comic book. All characters and environments are cell-shaded and game movies are beautifully animated. All characters powers are fluidly animated. Unlike the previous game, you have several different head-quarters in this game which are usually huge with interactive trivia (tests your knowledge of Marvel Universe), a Danger Room with lots of interactive missions and a review computer check up your game stats. Also the voice acting for each character is decent and background music during game play blends in nicely.

Character Customization is deep and addictive...

In conclusion, X-men Legends 2: Rise of Apocalypse is great game with a nice story and great game play. The improved graphics/sounds and the inclusion of 4-player Co-op online complement this game very nicely with an ultimate gaming experience that is indulging and very entertaining. The wide variety of characters, environments, and powers contribute to this stellar sequel that is a must buy even if you are not an avid X-Men fan. Don’t miss out on this one…My ratings are below:
